How Perspective Shapes History
History is about people. It’s about how they lived, the events that shaped them, and the lives they changed. Too often, the only history we learn about is the perspective provided by textbook publishers. This singular view has had the power to shape our whole understanding of the past. This is problematic because the only way to truly understand what has happened and the weight of historical events is to consider all of the perspectives and the tension that existed between them. It does not do to dismiss alternate viewpoints as simply wrong, even if you disagree with them. Considering opposing viewpoints allows for civility, unity, and understanding.
In a deeply divided world, the civility required to navigate divergent opinions can best be nurtured by forcing ourselves to step outside conventional wisdom and understand how others may perceive reality.
As we look out at the world we will inherit, we must condition ourselves to think more broadly. It is easy to take a stance first and think later, but we have to make an effort to educate ourselves and to seek all of the information, not just what is told to us by one source. Broadening our view of history is the first step. Acknowledging that more than one perspective existed and telling more stories expands our view of the modern world. Most importantly, it allows us to practice asking questions and seeing multiple perspectives.
