ISO recently conducted an audit/review of our fire department and twp water supply system. As a result, our ISO Rating has improved from a 6/6x to a 5/5y. Thank you to everyone that helped with the audit and that has helped us improve our department to achieve this new rating.
There is still plenty of room for improvement. We believe it maybe possible to reach an ISO 4 rating next cycle with more investment and development into our training program, recruitment, retention, and equipment testing schedules. The new ISO rating goes into full effect May 1st, 2024.
Current ISO Rating: 05/5Y
Through the Public Protection Classification (PPCTM) program, Insurance Services Organization "ISO" which is a private company evaluates fire protection efforts in communities throughout the United States and sells its information to insurance companies for their risk assessment.
ISO bases its ratings on periodic updates from fire departments, where evaluators assess manpower, level of training, equipment, availability of water and dispatching capabilities. Fifty percent of the rating is based on the Fire Department itself, 40 percent is based on the availability of a Water Supply and 10 percent is based on a community’s Emergency Communications. An additional 5.5% is for Divergence, which is a credit for Community Risk Reduction.
Many communities use this as a benchmark for measuring the effectiveness of their fire-protection services. ISO analyzes the relevant data using a Fire Suppression Rating Schedule. A Public Protection Classification is then assigned, ranging from 1 to 10. Class 1 represents exemplary public protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area’s fire suppression program doesn’t meet ISO’s minimum criteria. The PPC program is also a tool that helps communities plan for, budget, and justify improvements.
