Reading Comprehension Assessment and Miscue Analysis
Junie B., an endearing student of 12 years and 2 months, underwent an individual administration of the Gray Oral Reading Tests – fifth edition (GORT-5), a standardized assessment designed to measure oral reading abilities in students aged 6 through 23 years 11 months. Scores on the GORT estimate the following: Rate, Accuracy, Fluency, Comprehension, Oral Reading Index. The Oral Reading Index is reported as a standard score based on a distribution having a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. Rate, Accuracy, Fluency and Comprehension are reported as raw scores while grade equivalents, percentile ranks and scale scores have a mean of 10 and a standard deviation of three.
Junie B. achieved scaled scores of 3 for Rate, 6 for Accuracy, 4 for Fluency, and 4 for Comprehension. Her overall reading strength is reading accuracy. The GORT-5 serves four primary purposes: identification of students significantly behind peers in oral reading, discernment of individual oral reading strengths and weaknesses, monitoring of student progress in intervention programs, and facilitation of reading research. Beyond assessing comprehension, the GORT-5 offers reliable norm-referenced results, encompassing oral reading rate, accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.
Oral reading assessments, like the GORT-5, offer distinct advantages over silent reading assessments. The ability to observe and analyze deviations from print allows examiners, such as speech-language pathologists, to glean insights into how children approach reading, identify potential reasons for reading difficulties, and assess their ability to make critical letter-sound correspondences. Oral assessments enable the evaluation of decoding skills, including the recognition of multi-syllabic words with diverse syllable patterns and the identification of partially phonetically similar or irregular words. Oral reading tests, like the GORT-5, also provide valuable information on fluency, including prosodic features such as pitch, loudness, and expression. These features contribute to a comprehensive understanding of an individual's reading profile.
In Junie B.'s case, her GORT-5 scores reflect specific challenges in oral reading. Her scaled scores in Rate, Accuracy, Fluency, and Comprehension indicate areas where she may be facing difficulties. The sum of scaled scores offers a comprehensive overview of Junie's overall reading proficiency (8/20). Junie B.'s performance in prosody features, with scores of 1 across Expression, Volume, Phrasing, Smoothness, and Pacing, underscores potential challenges in the expressive aspects of her reading. Her miscue analysis reveals noteworthy patterns, such as a substantial proportion of miscues with meaning similarity (64%), function similarity (80%), and graphic-phonemic similarity (68%). Additionally, a high percentage (84%) of miscues involving multiple sources suggests a complex interaction of various factors contributing to reading challenges. Omission errors (13) and substitution errors (25) further contribute to a comprehensive understanding of Junie B.'s reading profile.
The GORT-5 results for Junie B. highlight specific areas of concern in her oral reading abilities, particularly with respect to comprehension of what she has read. The comprehensive assessment, along with the miscue analysis, provides valuable insights into her reading strengths and weaknesses. These findings can serve as a foundation for developing targeted interventions and support strategies to address her unique needs. It is recommended that Junie B.'s performance on the GORT-5 be considered in conjunction with other relevant assessments, observations, and contextual factors.
