Branch point: A point on a phylogenetic tree where a single lineage splits into distinct new ones.
Clade- Is a group of taxa with the same set of shared derived characters, including an ancestral species and its descendants.
Common ancestor- The most recent individual from which all the set organisms are descended.
Family Taxa- A taxon at the family level.
Genus taxa: The category in the taxonomic classification system that falls within a family and includes species; the first part of the scientific name.
Microevolution- The changes in a population's genetic structure (i.e., allele frequency).
Phylogenetic tree- A diagram showing the evolutionary relationships among biological species based on similarities and differences in genetic or physical traits or both.
Sister Taxa- Two lineages that diverged from the same branch point.
Species- The most specific category of classification.
