Theory and Aural are important branches of the 'tree' of music, and can be loosely translated as the 'written' and 'listening' elements of musical knowledge - although it really goes much deeper than that (in fact they should be called the 'roots'!).
These 'roots' are both complimentary and integral to playing a musical instrument and knowledge in these areas will enhance one's overall musical development and experience. Understanding the theory of how scales are formed, for example, will help the practical application of these scales on an instrument. Aural works in the same way: being able to identify a time signature by listening to it will greatly facilitate playing music in that time.
Put simply, theory and aural are the bedrock of sound musicianship.
Although elements of theory and aural can be learnt, osmosis-style, through instrumental tuition, there are times when particular focus is called for, such as when preparing for an examination.
In a practical instrumental exam, aural will form part of the 'supporting tests', therefore it is important to be suitably prepared.
Theory exams are written exams that are graded in a similar way to practical exams and 'sat' at a centre - much like any other written exam. ABSRM is a leading board for theory exams and I teach the syllabus from Grades 1 to 6 inclusive.
Theory
Is is advisable to start theory lessons early to enable incremental progress (rather than waiting until Grade 5 is on the horizon!)
All that is needed is a quiet space, a table and chairs, manuscript paper or workbook, pencil, eraser and a ruler.
Theory sessions can be delivered either from my home, or yours* (*travel costs may apply: please contact me for more information).
Aural
"I was able to learn a lot from my aural lessons with Miss Fenn because she explained every element with detail and was patient with me. I wouldn't have been able to start my musical journey as well as I did if I didn't have my wonderful teacher." - Jasmin
Want to brush up on your ear training? I am experienced in delivering aural tuition for all grades (1-8) of both ABRSM and TCL syllabi.
Sessions are authentically-led with full piano accompaniment. This is aural training designed to match word for word - and note for note - the instrumental exam setting. My sessions help you to be fully-prepared, relaxed and confident.
No matter what instrument you play, be it clarinet, violin, trombone or snare drum - I can help you with your aural training. Please contact me with your requirements!
