I have over 30 years' experience of delivering high quality tuition to learners of all ages, both in a school setting and privately. I have Qualified Teacher Status, an MMus from the Royal College of Music London, and I also hold a Licentiate of Trinity College London (LTCL) for Clarinet Performance, as well as Grade 8 Distinction on Piano.
Although classically-trained and qualified on piano and clarinet, I'm an equally proficient player of the saxophone, having taken up the instrument slightly later in life with the intention of expanding my musical experiences rather than following a "traditional" exam route; learning the instrument for its wonderful expressive qualities and utilising its versatility in playing jazz, contemporary, and popular styles of music.
So, if you're looking for lessons on piano, clarinet or saxophone, rest assured that you are in safe hands! I enjoy using my skills and knowledge to share my love of music, and help others discover the joy that playing a musical instrument can bring. Age is no barrier and I teach adults of all ages as well as children, from beginner to Grade 8. The most important requisite is a desire to learn, and a willingness to try new things!
MY CORE VALUES
I aim to make lessons fun and creative. If a student enjoys doing something, not only will they be more motivated to practise, but they will learn more. Listening and playing by ear will often feature and I utilise a variety of resources to help a student understand, learn and grow.
Lessons are carefully tailored to the individual. Everyone is different and we all learn in different ways. I embrace and respect those differences; after all, it's what makes us interesting!
I believe in creating a warm, supportive and encouraging environment to help a student achieve their best. Humour often plays a large part in my lessons!
Exams can be a useful benchmark of progress, but they are by no means mandatory. Some people like to progress "through the grades", and that is fine - when utilised well, they can be very motivational. For others, learning an instrument purely for the pleasure of playing MUSIC can be enough, maybe aiming to play in a concert or join in a group with friends. These things can be equally rewarding.
"Polly has recently become my piano teacher. My technique has improved greatly and I am gaining the confidence I need to tackle a Grade 7 exam. She is an outstanding musician and a talented teacher. I look forward to my lessons and the interesting discussions we have about the music. I recommend her to pupils of all abilities." - Rachel
"Ella absolutely loves her sax lessons - she says it's her favourite part of the day 😊" - Helen
