Philadelphia Student Union in Philadelphia, PA: For the last decade, the Philadelphia Student Union has been organizing to end the criminalization of Black youth and students of color in Philadelphia. In 2016, one of PSU’s members was assaulted and put in a choke hold by school police at Benjamin Franklin High School. Young people demand the Philadelphia School District remove all police and school resource officers from schools; have the Office of School Safety replace school police with community members trained in de-escalation, restorative justice, and other skills that support healthy schools and communities; and end its memorandum of understanding with the Philadelphia Police Department. PSU believes disciplinary and other school infractions should be dealt with by administration and staff, not the police. Use PSU’s tool kit to contract school board members and elevate their demands during their Thursday School Board Meeting and flood the board with commentary. Sign the young people’s petition here and get them over the 15,000 mark!
Urban Youth Collaborative in New York City, NY: For more than ten years, Urban Youth Collaborative has been fighting to remove police from schools. Young people are demanding the immediate removal of all police from schools, an end to arrests and summons, and investments in youth demands. Divestment from school police means removal of all police personnel from schools, whether employed by the NYPD, the Department of Education, or any other agency. The budget - which currently allocates $451 million to police in schools every year - must be finalized by Tuesday, June 30th. @UYC_YouthPower has been taking action all week demanding a police free school budget. There will be several actions on Thursday! Follow and uplift @UYC_YouthPower on Twitter to boost their powerful actions throughout the day.
Freedom Inc in Madison, WI: They did it! The young people of Freedom Inc. in Madison, WI pressured the Madison Metropolitan School District school board President and former police officer, Gloria Reyes, to put the contract with Madison Police Department on Monday’s (June 29th, 2020) school board meeting agenda! Black and Brown youth are demanding the school board votes for police free schools, terminating the contract without forming a subcommittee to study the issue and make recommendations. Youth of color already created a plan: Take cops out of schools and create an accountability process for school personnel who use police to harm children; invest in the leadership, wellness, and creativity of Black youth and youth of color; use Transformative Justice instead of punishing youth; and give youth, parents, trusted adults real decision making power over schools. At 4PM CST at the State Capitol, Freedom Inc will continue to rally and protest to ensure that all school board members hear the demands of the young people. They ready. They Comin.
