Freedom Inc. in Madison, WI: For the last 3 years, the young people of Freedom Inc. in Madison, WI have been organizing for the elimination of the Madison Metropolitan School District contract with Madison Police Department and the removal of police from schools.
Gloria Reyes, president of the school board and former police officer, announced she would support removing police from schools, but does not believe this decision can be made without forming a subcommittee to study the issue and make recommendations.
Youth of color already created a plan: Take cops out of schools and create an accountability process for school personnel who use police to harm children; invest in the leadership, wellness, and creativity of Black youth and youth of color; use Transformative Justice instead of punishing youth; and give youth, parents, trusted adults real decision making power over schools.
Support the Black and Brown young people and call on Gloria Reyes to put the vote to eliminate the contract on the next school board meeting agenda - call at (608) 228-5303 or email at greyes@madison.k12.wi.us!

Puente Human Rights Movement in Phoenix, AZ: In 2017, the young people of Puente Human Rights Movement launched their Cops Outta Campus campaign, driving the end of the school-to-prison-to-deportation pipeline and demanding the removal of police from school campus, the implementation of restorative justice, mental health support services, and Ethnic Studies. As of June 2019, Phoenix Union High School District board members Stephanie Parra, Stanford Prescott and Steve Gallardo all voted to renew SRO’s Intergovernmental Agreement with the City of Phoenix, but they have yet to vote on their 2020-2021 IGA. Youth are calling on Board President Stephanie Parra to hold a special meeting to defund school police. Students, parents, and teachers all need to know they are safe, all funding should be used for student support services, teachers, counselors, social workers, not the police. Students can’t wait until August! Click to send an email to Stephanie Parra demanding a special session.
Police Free Schools Coalition in Chicago, IL: For the last several years, young people in Chicago have been building a coalition of Black and Brown students organizing for the removal of police from schools and investments in their schools and communities. Young people are demanding the city of Chicago terminate it’s $33 million contract with the Chicago Police Department and use those funds to provide emergency response counseling and support for students in crisis. If re-allocated, the $33 million currently allotted to 180 SROs in CPS could fund positions for 317 social workers, 314 school psychologists, or 322 nurses. Last week Wednesday, three Chicago Aldermen co-sponsored an ordinance to terminate the CPS contract with CPD. But Mayor Lightfoot is trying to kill the ordinance before it even gets a vote by having one of her allies in City Council, Ald. Taliaferro, bury it in the rules committee (where legislation gets sent to die). Send a message to Mayor Lightfoot, Ald. Taliaferro, and the Chicago City Council to get the bill out of the rules committee so it can be voted on immediately! Tell Chicago Public Schools CEO, Janice Jackson, young people deserve police free schools. Learn more about their #CopsOutCPS organizing on their new website here.
