Croatian schools with Erasmus Accreditation

Being committed to lifelong learning as a fundamental educational concept, we assessed the needs in our school and identified three priority ones.

The first of the needs that we identified in our school is the improvement of teachers’ digital competence which includes the usage of advanced ICT tools in classroom work. It has been recognized as one of the eight key competencies in the educational community within Europe. (Digital Education Action Plan, Strateški okvir za digitalno sazrijevanje škola i školskog sustava u Republici Hrvatskoj (2030)). We have carried out projects dealing with digital technology usage in the classroom, one of them being the Erasmus partnership (2019). However, having conducted the survey, we came to the conclusion that only one third of the staff feel confident with the usage of digital technology and that they use it in the classroom on a regular basis. Digital technology is developing fast and we need to keep up with it. There are few courses dealing with the topic available in our area. Some of the teachers take online courses on their own. The majority of the teachers in the school possess only basic digital competencies. Our aim is to build the School Digital Strategy that will be integrated into our school curriculum. We expect that the usage of digital technology will be motivating for our students. It will facilitate the development of students' other key competencies. It will give them the chance to experience different learning styles and methods. We plan to send four teachers to structured courses.

Research has proven that innovative teaching methods significantly improve the student learning process. Having conducted a staff needs assessment, we found out that many teachers have fallen into a professional routine and they need to refresh their knowledge of the pedagogical practices. There are few professional training events in the area. Some of the teachers attend online courses on their own. During our staff meetings, we share the practices and techniques. However, we feel there is a need for more systematic change and advancement in this area. In order to tackle this issue, we plan to have four job shadowing activities with three teachers of different subjects attending each. We expect that our students will benefit from their teachers’ new knowledge and competences. Students will be more active and motivated for learning, they will take more responsibility for their learning process, and get more autonomous.

21st-century skills provide a solid foundation for successful learning. They ensure students are successful outside of the classroom, in real-world scenarios in life. Alongside the key competences, 21st-century skills have become the standard pedagogical "must" in education that every teacher should integrate into their professional practice. Having discussed with our students and teachers and on the basis of everyday classroom work, we have concluded there is a lack of effective 21st-century skills in our students as well as motivation to acquire them. Having participated in previous Erasmus+ schoolto-school partnerships, we noticed that our students learn much better in the international environment, that they are much more motivated to learn, and that their learning results and outcomes are much better. In order to meet this need, we plan to conduct one group mobility of school pupils per year. We plan to do it in partner schools on-site and online where our students will get the chance to learn together with their peers from other countries. We have already started an eTwinning project with partner schools in order to get to know each other and to establish the basis for our future cooperation. Our students will get a great opportunity to improve their communication as well as collaboration skills, and in addition, will get the chance to use their foreign languages.
