Comparison between

PocketLab Voyager and Vernier LabQuest 2

Context: Currently at Western Canada HS the Science department utilizes the LabQuest 1 and LabQuest 2 systems along with a variety of sensors. The equipment is constantly aging and needs replacements on a regular basis, giving the EVA an ideal opportunity to compare these two systems.

Hardware Analysis Conclusions

Cost: The PocketLab's greatest advantage is in the price. The PocketLab offers a wide range of sensor features, all of which must be purchased separately on the Vernier platform. The cost of purchasing PocketLab's complete system is $184. To achieve the same functionality, the Vernier's LabQuest 2 must purchase multiple additional sensors and the total cost is estimated around $1224.

However... PocketLab is a sensor only system. A supplementary digital device with appropriate OS is required.

Sensor Range and Accuracy: In general Vernier's equipment offers slightly better ranges, but its accuracy is on par with PocketLab

Warranty: Vernier offers 5 years over PocketLab's 3 years

Software: Both software deliver similar feature sets, including many recording and analyzing functions.

Conclusions: The end features of both products are about the same, but the cost of the sensor system is significantly cheaper for PocketLab. However because the PocketLab requires additional digital devices its use may be more restricted. In the context mentioned above, most students in high school have compatible personal devices and it may be worthwhile to try out the PocketLab.
