Type of Market

PocketLab is designed to serve all levels of Science education. The target market is K-12, but the product is also marketed at Post-secondary education. Lab sensors and equipment are necessary in all Science classrooms, all around the world. PocketLab offers a cost-effective equipment with sensitivity, accuracy and preciseness appropriate for the K-12 classroom.

PocketLab can also be utilized in higher education settings, but generally these institutions demand more precise and accurate equipment. Major institutions also have exclusive purchase contracts with suppliers. The equipment may not be considered good enough for a research lab.

Grade & Rationale: B | Lab equipment in the K-12 setting sees high use and needs frequent replacement, PocketLab offers a much cheaper alternative solution to traditional suppliers

Type of Offering

PocketLab's primary offering is their sensor hardware. It offers multiple high quality sensors in a small format at a extremely cost-effective price point. However users must bring their own wireless enabled device (phone, tablet, or computer) in order to record and analyze data.

They also offer software in the forms of apps, which allow for the recording and analyzing of sensor data.

Lastly PocketLab offers open source lesson plans, lab ideas and has provided a platform for educators around the world to share their ideas.

Grade & Rationale: A | The hardware is great value for its cost, in particular the sensor's multi-purpose design is unique. Its software is highly approachable and appropriate for all levels of Science. Its open-source resources for educators is unique and not offered by other manufacturers of similar equipment.

Who is the buyer?

This type of equipment and software is typically purchased by teachers or the school for their students (Learning Bought for Learner). It is possible for individual learners to also buy single units. In some jurisdictions it may be common to buy equipment on a school board level and distribute to school. However, schools usually equipment and supplies on the school level, in particular for K-12 Science classrooms this equipment is likely to be bought at the staff or department level. At Post-Secondary, purchasing may require more administrative oversight.

Grade & Rationale: B | Again the cost of the hardware makes it very approachable for purchase at the school level. However the size of the company means that larger scale purchases may be difficult. The product comes with a 3 year warranty and may not be durable enough for the level of use seen in schools. Product may not be commercial grade, making it inappropriate for purchase.

Global Target

PocketLab has already demonstrated its ability to enter global markets. Currently used in 60+ countries, PocketLab is able to access a wide variety of markets. This is likely due to the fact that Science around the world is done through English, the lingua franca of Science. Once the app has been downloaded the software and the sensor work without the use of the internet and any digital device with iOS, Android, Chrome OS, Windows 10 and Mac OS are able to utilize the system

Grade & Rationale: A | Already has demonstrated global reach. Software is accessible on many platforms.

Market Status

The Anglophone market largely supports the purchase and use of Scientific equipment. There is growing interest in supporting STEM in almost every nation in the world and therefore this market is expected to grow. In particular, Asian countries are extremely interested in developing their STEM disciplines and will continue to invest into this market. Consider the growth the market of student robotics, experiential Science is a key component of many new curriculums.

Grade & Rationale: B | It is not evident that PocketLab has entered the Asian market, which in the EVA's opinion is one of the most promising markets. The overall lab equipment market is projected to grow and STEM education will continue to receive significant attention for the foreseeable future. PocketLab just needs to demonstrate its plans to engage with this market.

Competition

This learning technology works best with a well-developed learning system. A strong STEM curriculum with a focus on hands-on-education is the type of market where PocketLab is most likely to thrive. In particular, PocketLab offers students the opportunity to design and implement their own experiments due to the variety of sensors available in one. This higher level thinking will require students to already have strong foundational knowledge. Currently the lab equipment market is designed to serve higher level research and industry science. The competition for sensor systems is not significant. Apple and Google are trying to enter this market, but their focus is on other hardware.

Grade & Rationale: B | PocketLab does have a first-to-market advantage. Its unique combination of hardware and software aimed at K-12 educators has not been challenged by other manufacturers in a significant way. However purchasing hardware in any K-12 system often is a slow and critical process. Commercially tested systems are often the preference.
