Lower-limb and Upper-limb movement Analysis:-

  • Even though act of walking appears as a simple task but the analysis of walking is a complex task.

  • The Gait Analysis Laboratory, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Christian Medical College was setup in year 1989 by the passionate efforts of Dr. Suranjan Bhattacharjee, ex-director and former head, Department of PMR, CMC Vellore. Over the years, gait analysis, which was started as a research tool has become a clinical diagnostic tool. In 2005, the laboratory was upgraded with the funding from Department of Science and Technology and donation from phasespace motion capture system. It is now equipped with Phasespace motion capture system for Kinematic measurement, a single Kistler force-platform for kinetics measurement and an 8 channel wired EMG system for recording muscle activity. All these are integrated with the customized software built in-house over several years, in phases, which synchronizes data acquisition and generates analysis report.

  • The team of clinicians, gait analyst and engineers meet every Monday to discuss the gait analysis report of patients whose gait analysis were done the previous week. Conservative or surgical interventions are planned to enhance the mobility of the patients. Pre and post treatment reports are compared to study the efficacy of the interventions. The Gait analysis laboratory is also involved in several research activities and has published national and international articles in reputed journals. Teaching modules are planned for undergraduate and post graduate medical, engineering and allied health students.
