Dear all,

Welcome to the Website of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at CMC Vellore! I hope that these pages will be useful to our colleagues, students and patients who would like to get our help and assistance. This department was started by Dr Mary Verghese in 1962 and since then our faculty and staff have strived to provide the highest standard of care for patients and the best training to our undergraduate and postgraduate students. We are a multidisciplinary team and we have a shared vision: Healing is being restored to the purpose for which each person is created.  This website provides a glimpse into our heritage, an over view of the services provided in different campuses, the academic and research activities.  

We have been blessed with a rich heritage and so we have many firsts in the country: 

1. The first Wheelchair Surgeon & Physiatrist – Dr Mary Verghese in 1957. 

2. The first president of Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IAPMR) - Dr. Mary Verghese-1972.

3. The first Rehabilitation Institute -1966.

4. The first Rehab Engineering - 1976.

5. The first Gait Lab -  1989.

6. The first Rehab Mela for those with spinal injuries - 1994. 

7. The first Brain injury Mela – 2004. 

8. Patient advocacy group - Spinal Injury care India Association -2011. 

9. The first C-Mill Robotics in - 2023.
