The Special Needs Committee (SNC) is made up of dedicated parent volunteers committed to making a difference in the lives of our special needs students and their families. Committee members include PUSD administrators from Special Education as well as Parent Liaisons. Our goal is to foster and maintain positive relationships between parents and PUSD, and spread awareness as well as acceptance of ALL abilities within our community.
SNC sponsors free evening speaker events with well-known local authorities. Topics include learning and behavioral challenges, anxiety in children and teens, ADHD, understanding the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and 504 processes, and building blocks to a successful collaboration between parents and schools.
We also host social events for children and parents that foster a welcoming, inclusive community where families can connect, parents can learn from one another, and children of all abilities can build lasting friendships.
SNC defines “special needs” as a term that applies to children who are gifted learners, any child with a learning or processing difference, physical disability, cognitive delay, speech & language delay, behavioral challenges, social or emotional difficulty, and those with food allergies.
The Special Needs Committee (SNC) is a standing committee of the Pleasanton PTA Council, which supports and connects the individual PTAs and PTSAs serving schools throughout Pleasanton Unified School District (PUSD). Through this Council-wide role, SNC is connected to families and school communities across the District.
Each school’s PTA or PTSA is part of a larger PTA network that includes the Pleasanton PTA Council, regional PTA District, California State PTA, and National PTA. This structure provides local PTAs with resources, support, and a broader voice for children and families.
PTA’s mission is “to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.” That mission has deep local roots: Pleasanton’s own Phoebe Apperson Hearst was one of the founders of the organization that became the National PTA, dating back to 1897.
The Pleasanton PTA Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
