FAQ

What if I want to use WeDo 2.0 or EV3 Mindstorms?

You can use whatever you want when it comes to LEGO. Feel free to explore any of the pieces and kits you have while working through the excercises and challenges.

For equity purposes the challenges that will be posted will require nothing more than basic LEGO pieces. However, you may use any parts, sensors, motors, bricks that you want. The more variation in building the better!

Do I have to commit to scheduled time?

No. This is a self paced course. Each month I will drop the challenges, resources, and guides for the theme. It is up to you to work through the ideas each week. Ideally, it is beneficial to stick with the group to be part of the conversation, but we all know how crazy life is in the education world. Just do you and make it work!

There might be some live show and tell events, but those are just icing on the cake.

What if I joined late and missed the newsletters?

Do your best to catch up by exploring this website.

What if I have a resource or idea to share?

PLEASE Share! I will add it to the necessary section. This site is a living breathing document designed to be empowered by educators. It is only as good as the people who contribute!

What if I want to be on the podcast to share ideas with everyone?

Simply let me know and we will make it happen. See how easy this is?

How do you document your builds?

What LEGO do I need?

Many are asking about what LEGO to buy or is needed for this course. There is not any requirement as I understand all budgets, resources, and access is different for each person.

With that being said, having a bin of LEGO is helpful. You don't need a specific kit or certain number of pieces. Part of the beauty of LEGO is taking what you have to make it work. The creative constraints come with limited pieces. Even with my massive collection of LEGO when I work with schools I keep the parts limited as too much can feel overwhelming.

I don't have any time for play in my classroom

This is not really a question, but a common statement shared time and time again. One of the most important goals of this course is to help you build confidence within yourself and to play again. I think many adults consider play as glorified recess. When we embark in play we wil realize how much thinking and learning goes with play.

Once we understand the power of play, then we can begin to make steps to infuse play into our lessons. There is time to do this, but it requires taking something away. There is not more time, but there is time in our class that can be better utilized. As we work together sharing ideas I hope that you will all find ways to see where play can be used.

How do I get more girls involved in LEGO?

Equity is huge. Whether we are talking about girls or other demographics. We will explore this topic as we go, but it is real issue. WE have found some options such as the following help:

  • Create a girls only club/space to build safety and a place for them
  • Create build challenges that appeal to girls
  • Showcase females that work at LEGO and other design companies so they can see themselves in these fields.
