January pollen species come from plants in the immediate neighborhood, as honey bees cannot fly far in cold temperatures. For example, the most likely source of the top pollen is the European hazelnut tree behind my beehives.
The species was identified with certainty when related species with similar pollen shapes were not yet in bloom.
