In this Atlas module we are going to take a closer look at how inequalities in the United States compare to other locations around the globe. We are going to look at three different datasets and make a series of maps in a new MyMaps of “Inequality in the US in a Global Context.”
According to the CDC "The infant mortality rate is the number of infant deaths for every 1,000 live births. In addition to giving us key information about maternal and infant health, the infant mortality rate is an important marker of the overall health of a society."
The map shown below shows US States that exceed the average of infant mortality rate (IMR). It also shows other countries in the world that fall into the same range of IMR as US States.
The above map shows how certain parts of the US that are above the nation average for IMR compare with other countries. For instance, not Mississippi with an infant mortality rate of 8.1 is comparable to the countries of Greece, Turkey and Kazakhstan. Now also discuss the second highest category.
"Homicide is a large killer globally – in some countries, it’s one of the leading causes of death.
The Global Burden of Disease is a major global study on the causes of death and disease published in the medical journal The Lancet.2"
In the map above we can see that the highest concentrations of homicides occur _____________ (list areas). Also, in comparison to the United States other countries that fall in the same range include __________________________________________. Also not how Europe and other Continents look overall in terms of homicides.
First, compare the highest rated US States to Countries with the same rate. Discuss the findings of this exercise as it relates to poverty. When you compare Mississippi and Louisiana with the other countries, was there any surprises for you? Where were the highest ranked countries of poverty within this range. Note, high rates were removed that is why all of Africa doesn’t show. We are only looking at 11% - 19% poverty which can be mentioned in your summary
