Travelling stay (left) and fixed stay, serial number 1253
Unlisted type of travelling steady
Above left are the two stay's or to use the more modern term "steadies" which were provided with my B2, the one with the circular aperture is intended to be fitted to the round saddle and was a standard accessory provided with every Pittler lathe.
According to Pittlers catalogues this type of travelling stay is listed as usually being supplied for the larger C3 lathe.
A travelling stay is shown fitted to the saddle ring on the photo to the left, it supported a thin workpiece held between centres as the saddle moved along the bed with the cutter, this prevented the workpiece from distorting due to tool pressure.
The fixed stay was bolted directly to the bed and didn't move, It can also support work held between centres but also holds the opposite end of a long workpiece held in the chuck so that the end can be machined. It was listed as an extra cost but this one was clearly factory fitted as it bears the same serial number 1253.
On the r/hand photo are three different types of travelling stays for the B2, the one at the top with the set of holes is the standard issue, the one on the left is not shown in any of Pittlers catalogues, it came with my B2 from the "Invention " factory.
It is made of case hardened steel of very high quality so may be a special order or experimental type. It is shown mounted on the lathe on the photo on the left
