In the New York City Department of Education, BIPOC students and students with disabilities are suspended at drastically disproportionate rates. The Pink Slip Project was created to find alternatives to suspension and other punitive measures in the DOE.
Student voices must be centered in this conversation. We are soliciting firsthand stories from students and the public about their experiences with discipline, avoiding retraumatization. We also engaged in academic research to establish an understanding about the current viewpoints and reform regarding school suspension.
Along with experiences, we are asking students and the public for ideas they believe can replace punitive measures in schools.
With student stories and publicly sourced alternatives at the foreground, we will connect and expand upon the field of restorative and transformative justice.
