Downsizing your jewellery is essential after getting a new piercing. Downsizing should be done within 2 week to 3 months after getting a piercing. We use longer bars for the initial piercing to accomodate for any swelling that may occur.
How do I know when to downsize?
Once the piercing is more established, swelling is gone and it's producing less crust to clean, then it may be time for a downsize. This is usually after 4-6 weeks from the piercing date. For oral piercings, downsizing needs to be done 2-4 weeks after the piercing date. Downsizing oral piercings is very important, it lessens the risk of gum and tooth damage with a properly fitted piece of jewellery. Depending on the area pierced, it may require multiple downsizes. Aswell as some piercings don't need downsizing, such as septums, daiths, sometimes nipples and navels.
What happens if I don't downsize my jewllery?
If the jewllery does not get downsized then you may expect irritation bumps, delayed healing and migration. Sleeping on a piercing that has not been downsized can cause the angle to shift.
