After Care Myths
In this blog I will be discussing some of the misinformation about piercing after care. A lot of these myths are commonly told to clients by chemists and jewellery stores that are now offering ear piercings.
You have to twist the piercing everyday so they don't get stuck!
This is advice, it is still being handed out usually by chemist and jewellery stores like Lovisa. You have to twist the jewellery everyday or your skin is going to grow over and get stuck!
This informations dates back to when they pierced ears with sewing needles and thread. They would leave a piece of thread in the ear and tie it in a knot, leave it in for a few days to a week then change to metal earrings. Thread being porous will get stuck in a healing wound (like gauze on a scraped knee), smooth metal will not.
The skin inside the tunnel (fistula) must undergo various phases of healing and during the healing phase, the skin is extremely delicte and prone to injury. Twisting the piercing breaks the newly forming flesh. It is the same as constanly picking scabs on a healing wound.
Alcohol will clean my piercing!
Alcohol is in everyones medicine cabinets and has been used on injuries for a long time. But, alcohol on piercings is not the best idea. Alcohol is very harsh, drying or irriating to piercings, particularly to healing wounds. Alcohol is amazing at kills germs and we use it to prep the skin for piericng. Yes it will kill bacteria but it will also kill and irritate healthy skin and wound bed.
Home made salt mixture
Why would it not work the same as saline solution? Sterile saline solution/woudn wash is whats called an isotonic mixture. This means the salt and PH levels are similar to our bodies and bodily fluids, meaning no burning or stinging while cleaning.
It's impossible to create this exact mixture at home. Beyond that, saline solution is packaged in an aerosol can, meaning it reamins sterile no matter how long you have it. Not to mention you are likely using food grade salt, food grade anything has an appectable amount of bugs and animal matter.
Don't put anything on your piercing you wouldn't put in your eyes!
