General Zebulon Pike was an American explorer at the same time as Lewis and Clark. He took two exploration trips through the Louisiana Purchase into the West and Southwest, in consecutive years. The second of these trips, starting in 1806, is what made him famous, as he explored the southern Rocky Mountains and ended up spotting what we now know as Pikes Peak. With his men, he attempted to summit the mountain. However, the already deep snow in November made the feat impossible, and they had to turn back. Nevertheless, the surrounding people and even the Spanish (who captured him for a time), started to refer to the mountain as Pike's Peak. Eventually, the name stuck, and the apostrophe was officially removed. The general would later write an immensely popular book based on his numerous travel journals. Overall, General Zebulon Pike was a faithful solider and pioneer, dedicated to his country’s service under President Thomas Jefferson.
