Registering for classes correctly ensures you get the courses you need to stay on track toward your degree. Knowing how to schedule, adjust, and confirm classes reduces stress, prevents registration errors, and helps you plan a balanced academic workload.
Students will be able to:
Explain the importance of registering for classes correctly.
Differentiate between in-person and online classes.
Activate and use a student ID.
Schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.
Read and interpret a class schedule.
Understand credit hours and estimated weekly workload.
Order textbooks and learning materials.
Seek support from advisors or the WV WORKS Coordinator.
Consider your learning style and schedule:
Online Classes: Flexible, convenient, but require self-discipline, time management, and technology skills
In-Person Classes: More structure and face-to-face interaction
You can mix online and in-person to fit your needs
If you are a new student: Activate your student ID.
If you need help with this, contact your Pierpont WV WORKS Coordinator.

Meet with your advisor.
Make an appointment and meet with your Pierpont WV WORKS Coordinator, academic advisor, or Pierpont's Student Services advisors to discuss what classes you need and which are available.
Register for your classes using Register/Schedule Builder.
You reach your Schedule Builder by clicking on Register on the My Apps page that you reach when you log on to your Portal.
(You should do this with your advisor at least the first time to learn how to use the program.)
A class schedule provides key details for each course:
Course Name & Number: Identify the subject and section
Credit Hours: The amount of time and effort expected per week (typically 2–3 hours per credit hour outside class)
Time & Days: When the class meets
Instructor: Who is teaching the course
Location: In-person room or online platform
Credit Hours Explained:
One credit hour usually equals about 1 hour in class and 2–3 hours of homework per week. (For example, a 3-credit class typically requires 3 hours in class and 6–9 hours of study weekly.)
This is a sample schedule:
Once you have your class schedule, it’s time to get your textbooks. Keep your course name and number handy so you can order the right materials. Some classes need a physical or digital textbook, some need access codes for online platforms, and some use Open Educational Resources (OER), which are free. Your Pierpont WV WORKS Coordinator or academic advisor can help you figure out what you need and how to get it.
