Part 5

As you were working, you started thinking that maybe a prism isn't the best shape. You thought, maybe a cylinder would be better! (That's really thinking outside of the box-ha!)

You decided to try to create 2 more prototypes (to REALLY impress your boss) with cylinders instead of prisms. You will need 2 more pieces of white copy paper.

  • Cylinder #1-Create a cylinder wrapping the paper the long way and tape it WITHOUT OVERLAPPING!
  • Cylinder #2-Create a cylinder wrapping the paper the wide way and tape it WITHOUT OVERLAPPING!

  1. Which cylinder do you think has the largest volume?
  2. Predict how the cylinder volume(s) will compare with those with rectangle and triangle bases.
  3. Using the same formula for volume, determine the volume for the cylinders.

Volume of Cylinder = area of the base x height

Area of a circle =

How to find the radius (*hint-you know the circumference of your circle base)

Your boss wants your charts, data, calculations and a short paragraph explaining your findings. Don't forget to include which container YOU think will be the best to use for Popcorn Popping Peoples' newest popcorn holder, and why!
