Depth

My hopes for this body of work is that it will present the chance to explore on a greater depth the range and extent of emotions that can often be felt by individuals within the LGBT+ community and through this, come to a better understanding and a greater compassion for one another in our daily lives.

The issues I have chosen to focus on can be commonly associated with this community as I chose to focus on issues such as mental health, sexual identity and the emotions that often coincide these experiences. Through each photo, I have chosen to express and emphasize their respective issues through the use of color, as often colors are associated with specific emotions. My own personal experiences have greatly effected each of the pieces I’ve created as I identify as an individual within this community, and each of these photos portrays a concept that I have found myself examining one way or another throughout my life. The photo on the left of the center photo can be seen to be slightly elevated in comparison to the photo on the other side, which was intended to further suggest the polarity of the two photos in relation to one another. By placing the photo of myself in the center, it creates a single individual that ties each emotion being expressed into a single person.

Split-

While colors can be associated with emotion, they also play a role in stereotyping, which is seen through the notion pink is for girls, blue for boys. However when looking at this concept holistically, this portrays the inability of an individual to explore both masculinity and femininity without judgment. This piece argues that no one should be confined to having to make a ‘this-or-that’ decision, which is imposed by the constructs of society when defining one’s identity is never as easy.

End of the day-

This photo captures the privacy of the location while the colors invite the audience to reflect on their own emotions, as suggested by the title of the piece, at the end of the day. This is often when thoughts seem to speak loudest in the mind, and with that often follows the most self-reflection. The gradient of a deep blue at the bottom of the piece becoming a soft, bright magenta at the top also expresses the depth and extent to which a single day can affect you.

one... -

This photo and the next one work in tandem with one another. Both photos are taken in the same location and represent the contrasting emotions of being by oneself.

This photo shows the positive growth of being by oneself, which can be seen through the light colors throughout the entire composition in varying blues and white. The over-exposure of light adds a near dream-like feeling to the composition, suggesting ease in the individual, capturing what feels to be a genuine moment of peace.

or the other-

While being or feeling alone can felt by anyone, the extent of self-doubt, the questioning of whether it’s by your choice or if it was others, is often heightened when living in a world where there are those who feel they have the right to judge another person by a single aspect of their identity. This photo works to capture this doubt that often races through the mind, portraying the opposite of the photo before. This is furthered through contrasting values of light and dark and time of the day.

Untitled-

This photo is placed in the center of this body of work. It’s equal on all sides, creating a sense of balance and harmony, yet the focus on the subject is blurred and the title… untitled. That’s because even when a piece of work is thought to be completed, it is not. The future and even the present seem unclear, yet the colors nor the subject are stressed. Rather, the composition invites the viewer into ending their thought with hope, until they find it is no longer untitled.
