Braeden Sconce Memorial Sportsmanship Award

Braeden Sconce embodied sportsmanship while competing on several teams representing the South Callaway school district in Missouri. I was one of Braeden’s track coaches during his eighth grade year, and I remember how his warm leadership and guidance encouraged his teammates and his fellow competitors to do their very best. While Braeden did not play quizbowl himself, he did compete in local “math relays” contests and earn several academic awards. Braeden’s brother, Caleb, did play quizbowl and loved it, no doubt buoyed by his brother’s cheerleading.

Braeden also loved the Philadelphia Eagles. In February 2018, on his way home to cheer on the Eagles in the Super Bowl, Braeden was involved in a car accident, leading to a traumatic brain injury which eventually claimed his life. In the car with Braeden to be worn during the game was a jersey of his favorite player, Zach Ertz. In the ensuing weeks, the Eagles organization and the Ertz family extended their hand to the Sconces. As a new Philadelphia resident, my spirits were lifted knowing that my new city and my hometown were now connected in an indelible way.

Therefore, in honor of both Braeden and the city which shared its brotherly love, I am establishing the Braeden Sconce Memorial Sportsmanship Award, to be awarded each year to one or more competitors at the Philly Invitational Quizbowl Tournament who embody the values of respect, kindness, generosity, and selflessness. Selection of the recipient(s) will be made collectively by the tournament staff. While staff members will be on the lookout for instances of sportsmanship, tournament participants are encouraged to nominate members of other teams as well by reporting to the tournament director.
