Financial support and grant included. FRQ Audace grant.
Description
Participate in the research, development and creation of acoustic lens for sound art and sound installation. Part of a multidisciplinary research project that bridges the gap between arts and technologies with collaborators from music, art, engineering and acoustics. The outcome of the project will be presented to the public as a sound installation on public space. Topics : sound installation, meta-materials, 3D printing, acoustical lens, acoustical meta-materials.

Master project with industrial partners and large-scale multidisciplinary research team. Financial support and grant included.
Description
This research project is part of an ambitious and multidisciplinary project (dXBel) aimed at developing and validating a vibro-acoustic virtual mock-up allowing the simulation, reconstruction and listening of the noise to the operator and to the passing of recreational vehicles. The objective of this tool is to listen to and compare the acoustic behavior of recreational vehicles for different configurations, to lead to quieter vehicles for the operator and the passage, to improve their sound quality, to reduce the time required for development and to reduce the number of prototypes. Thus, the vibro-acoustic mock-up will virtually modify the sound signature, according to the desired sound profile by users.
The research work of the student at the master's degree (Maîtrise) consists in validating the mock-up from a perceptual point of view (sound quality), to ensure the good reproduction of sound signals. The student will work with a PhD student, a professional research and two professors, specialists in acoustics and vibration.
The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Centre de technologie avancées BRP-Université de Sherbrooke Advanced Technology Center and involves 11 graduate students.

Virtual acoustic is aimed the combination of acoustical sciences with virtual reality in a new paradigm. By creating virtual acoustical prototypes, it is possible the place the listeners or users at the center of acoustical designs through listening tests.
The Groupe d’Acoustique de l’Université de Sherbrooke (GAUS) own a 96-channel Wave Field Synthesis system that will be the center piece of the PhD project. The GAUS also own several microphone arrays and binaural equipment for virtual acoustics. The WFS system is also now augmented of a 50-channel 3D Ambisonic system. In 2018, a doubler-layer 100-channel Ambisonics microphone will be fabricated. Researchers in virtual acoustics at the GAUS are also members of the CIRMMT (Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music, Media, and Technology, McGill University).

Preparation, realization and valorization of tests with human subjects for the evaluation earplugs comfort. The tests are based on the virtual reproduction of sound environments thanks to a system of 96 loudspeakers. Contribute to the creation of a series of earplugs comfort indices by campaigns of subjective tests with a variety of commercial earplugs using virtual acoustic technologies. Possible extension of virtual acoustics to virtual mock-up for sound quality.
Context: This fellowship is part of a large-scale research project entitled "Development of a series of comfort indices for earplugs to improve the hearing protection of workers," carried out by a multidisciplinary team (École Technologie Supérieure [ETS], Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et sécurité au travail [IRSST], Université de Sherbrooke).
Issue: In Québec, hearing loss is by far the most registered occupational disease and the number of workers affected by it is increasing. The effectiveness of hearing protectors is often lower than expected because protectors are badly worn and/or insufficiently long. The cause is yet well known: the hearing protectors are uncomfortable.
