The “Phela u Phelise” SPCs supported by faculty from the Department of Nursing, conducted trainings for the VHWs. The trainings were held at the Primary Health Care Centres on dates that were agreed upon with the VHWs, SPCs, and clinic management. The content and duration of the training were determined by the pre-assessment, but mainly focused on stroke prevention and home-based care of stroke patients. The lessons were conducted in Sesotho, which was the ideal language for the VHWs. Short messages were sent to VHWs from time to time to remind them of key concepts in stroke prevention and management. The local radio station was used to complement the training given to VHWs and to sensitize members of the community about the project.
