We are excited to launch our first event of the ResearchYourWay Funding Scheme. In collaboration with the London Mathematical Society Inclusion and Diversity Fund, and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, we will be launching our first hour long webinar "Is a PhD Right for Me?". During our October events we find most of the conversation focuses on the upcoming application cycle, with attendees already thinking about applying for a PhD, but don't know where to start. This spring, our event is more focused around supporting those taking their first steps towards deciding if a PhD is for them. We will bring together a panel of current PhD students to share their experiences and answer questions the audience may have. Full information below:
When: March 4th 2026, 13:30-14:30 GMT
Where: Online Livestream
What: PhD Panel Q&A Webinar
How: Free to attend, funded by the LMS, IMA, and EDIHub+

We are delighted to announce that we have been successfully awarded funding as part of the EPSRC EDIHub+ Flexible Fund to scale up our annual PhDYourWay event into a sustainable initiative that sits across the entire research career pipeline, aptly named ResearchYourWay.
Over the last four years of delivering PhDYourWay we have consistently adapted to our audience's needs, and it has now hit the point where we feel confident that we can expand our reach whilst maintaining the same quality of event we bring to our UK maths PhD hopefuls. ResearchYourWay (RYW) will focus on three main directions of expansion, all whilst ensuring sustainability of our current offering of support. Our directions of focus for the 2026 year are:
Breadth: We are excited to offer guidance and support to map our offering to the mathematical landscape to other subject areas in the Engineering, Mathematical and Physical Sciences. We know that each subject area has its own funding body structure, and the PhD process for an experimentalist and a theorist may look vastly different, so we will ensure that the advice is translated effectively and co-designed with those from other disciplines
Depth: During our annual event we get so many interesting questions from people focusing on their own lived experiences that we never have time to get through, so we'd like to host a series of events centring the voices of different underrepresented groups in the UK Mathematical landscape. By collaborating with existing networks and communities, we aim to create a platform where these groups can share their experiences directly with their own members.
Height: It feels mad to say, but the students that came to our first ever PhDYourWay event are currently graduating from their PhD programmes! And if we thought that applying for a PhD was opaque, navigating the post-doctoral landscape is just as confusing. We want to provide support and guidance to those looking to continue into research post-PhD, by hosting information and events that showcase the range of possible career options across academic and industrial research.
