Upkaruna Kindergarten is located in Yogyakarta, a city rich in history and vibrant culture. This kindergarten focuses on holistic child development through creative learning approaches that combine English language education with social and emotional growth.
The school environment is warm and welcoming, with classes organized by age groups from 3 to 5 years old, ensuring that activities are age-appropriate and developmental.
As an assistant teacher under the SEA Teacher program, I was assigned to teach early childhood (kindergarten) students, focusing mainly on English.
Teaching young children requires engaging activities that spark their interest and curiosity, such as singing songs, playing games, drawing, and storytelling.
Rather than rote memorization, the goal is to help children actively participate and use English naturally in daily life contexts.
At Upkaruna Kindergarten, teaching combined English language use with developmentally appropriate activities. My responsibilities included creating lesson plans and activities tailored to the children’s interests and developmental levels — such as role-playing, arts and crafts, and vocabulary games.
I worked closely with a mentoring teacher to coordinate classroom management and ensure the lessons aligned with the school’s curriculum.
English was the primary language of instruction, so I focused on clear, simple communication, using short sentences, gestures, and visual aids to help students understand and participate.
English was used predominantly both in the classroom and among the teaching staff.
While some communication with locals involved Indonesian, most interactions in the school setting were in English, giving me a great chance to practice real-life English skills in both teaching and daily conversations with colleagues and parents.
Spending a month as a SEA Teacher in Indonesia taught me far more than just how to teach English in a classroom. It was a life-changing journey that gave me growth in many aspects — professionally, personally, socially, and emotionally. Here are the many things I gained from this unforgettable experience:
