"The Deep Portage Pharmaceutical Care Conference began in 2002 and was initially hosted by the Peters Institute of Pharmaceutical Care at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. The purpose of the Deep Portage Conference was to create an environment that convened students, faculty, practitioners, and stakeholders to foster innovative practice ideas. A key element of the original vision, which remains in place today, is for participants to “get away” and immerse themselves in the experience and natural surroundings. The event was (and is currently) held at the Deep Portage Nature Conservatory located in a remote area in northern Minnesota. At the inaugural event, Peters Institute Chair, Dr. Bob Cipolle, previewed the unique and intentional style of the event by stating in his introductory comments, “We make only one promise. This retreat will be fun! You may or may not leave smarter than when you arrived, but you will enjoy yourself.”
Much of the original philosophy and design for the retreat remains in place today; however, the name (Pharmaceutical Care Lyceum) and “host” (a self-organized group of committed practitioners) of the event has changed. Each year, organizers identify a theme that is relevant to the current state of CMM practice. There is an expectation that all participants play an active role and acknowledge that stimulating dialogue is valued over traditional presentations. Accommodations are intentionally rustic. Outdoor activities are planned throughout the retreat to keep participants active and allow time to process information. Opportunities for personal reflection and establishing commitments to one's practice are embraced."
