School Psychologists
-National Association of School Psychologist
Prince George County Public Schools employs four school psychologists. In Virginia, school psychologists are required to complete a highly-specialized advanced graduate program that includes coursework and practical experiences relevant to both psychology and education, which makes them uniquely qualified to practice in a school setting. School psychologists typically complete either a specialist-level degree program of at least 60 graduate semester hours or a doctoral degree of at least 90 graduate hours, both of which must include a year-long 1,200-hour supervised internship. School psychologists must be licensed as such through the Virginia Department of Education.
Prince George County’s school psychologists actively participate in student-based intervention team meetings, eligibility and IEP meetings, manifestation determination, and behavioral intervention meetings. In addition, these education specialists respond to support school teams conducting threat assessments, suicide risk assessments, and other crisis interventions.
Our school psychologists also support the division professional development efforts by conducting training in relevant topics such as bullying prevention; disability awareness; basic dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia awareness; and other evidence-based academic and behavioral strategies.
Prince George’s school psychologists can also be seen at community events such as the Back-to-School Fair, Toddler Fair, and other Child Find events coordinated through multi-agency collaboration.
