The idea of having a giant statue in the middle of the volcano and designing the temple around it came directly from how Zelda games utilize a central room or dungeon mechanic that manipulates the navigation of the dungeon. I learned this from CaptBurgerson's series. I highly recommend giving it a watch.
A good example is the spinning staircase in the central room of Lakebed Temple from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
