Each year, the American Cancer Society hosts a Relay for Life at the Clinton County Fair Grounds (84 Fair Grounds Rd, Plattsburgh, NY) to bring cancer awareness and honor those who have fought, are currently fighting, or lost their battle against cancer. Ausable Chasm is an excellent way to get out into nature! They offer tons of activities such as Rappelling, Rock Climbing, Tubing and Rafting, and an Adventure Trail among other activities. Each activity has a different price, however they do offer packages if your family wants to go have an adventure. They also offer lodging for those who want to stay overnight. Rulf's is a family owned Orchard just off of the interstate in Peru, NY where you can bring children to pick their own produce such as apples, pumpkins, raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries when in season. Admission is free to walk around the orchard, but activities have a small fee. In the fall, they host corn mazes as well as pumpkin rides. A small park in the center of the town, Little Ausable Park is an excellent resource for kids to release energy with a variety of activities such as swings, a playground, and a gazebo. During the winter months, the pond at the bottom of the hill is open for ice skating as well as snow tubing or sledding, free to all who have equipment. Every Sunday, the town gathers to watch local bands perform in the gazebo, free to any music lover.
This building at the center of this park is a town relic, dating back to the 1800's. Historical informational plaques can be found scattered among the forestry, giving lessons about parts of town, as well as people who made an impact in the town's history. A dog park can be found to the left of the building, across a small bridge, which is divided into 2 sections; one for bigger dogs, and one for small. There is also a mile-long trail that leads to the other side of town, which is open to walkers as well as bikers, and is animal friendly.
Peru Junior and Senior High School offers a variety of sports year-round that students can join if in good academic standing. Children younger than 11 can participate in summer town sports, which they can register for at the Town Hall (open 9am-3pm M-F). Peru HS Athletic Calendar.Â
