Tampon TAX

Taxes are applied to luxury items. However, menstruation products, such as tampons and pads, are taxed. The tax ranges from 4.7-10 % on a product that is a necessity to menstruating individuals. As of 2022, 23 states still have a tampon tax. Menstruation products are not a luxury they are a necessity, and it is entirely sexist and discriminatory to target menstruating individuals.

California's Tampon Tax history

Senate Bill 92 took effect January 1 of 2020 and took away the tampon and diaper tax in California for the next two years. In 2021 California passed AB 150, making menstrual products and diapers permanently free from being taxed. Essentially, it is only very recently that menstrual products are not being taxed.
