Impact and Achievements
The Period Priority Project has made remarkable strides in advancing menstrual equity, distributing over 30,000 menstrual products across Canada since 2022. In 2022, the project provided 6,500+ products to shelters and community organizations in response to Hurricane Fiona and other needs. A key achievement was successfully advocating for menstrual products in 7 public facilities in St. John’s. In 2023, the project expanded its reach to distribute 17,291 products and secured free products for 10 more public facilities and Memorial University. The project also grew its educational outreach, hosting 8 workshops, launching a podcast series, and publishing 35+ pieces on period poverty and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
In 2024, the project continued to make an impact by distributing 4,256 products and securing a partnership between the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and Shoppers Drug Mart to provide free period products. The project also led policy changes at Memorial University and the City of St. John’s to ensure continued access. In addition, the project published a scholarly article in the Canadian Journal of Public Health on period poverty in Canada and hosted a Free Periods Canada workshop. The project has received 7 award nominations and been featured on CBC, CTV, and NTV News, amplifying its mission and reaching thousands.
