The Spatial Apriori of Virtual Reality
The presentation challenges the idea of space as an a priori form of intuition by foregrounding the
limitations of virtual reality in HMD’s, such as the Meta Quest, through the concept of a pre-given
structure of spatial perception. This enables the original Kantian concept to be challenged by what
Michel Foucault termed the 'empirico-transcendental doublet', which was initially used to describe a
historical configuration of knowledge. Virtual reality then can be redefined as a medium with a
particular topology, like the 'guardian' of the Quest that defines the boundaries of the playable
space in a transcendental way while remaining empirical. From here presentation also discusses the
concepts of virtual reality and its spatial features, such as stereoscopic vision combined with a
panoramic view, degrees of freedom in movement and the orientation of the viewing space in order
to explore the possibility of ‘other spaces’.
