one weekly 30-minute small group lesson. Students are pulled out of class with 3-5 other students who play the same instrument. The time rotates each week so that students don't miss the same class.
twice a week starting in January. This is in addition to a small group lesson once a week. Ensemble rehearsals are Tuesday and Friday's during recess.
Students first have the opportunity to join orchestra in 5th grade. In early September, the 5th grade students will travel to the HS to watch the HS orchestra perform and talk about orchestra. Ms. Crawford will also visit all the 5th grade general music classes to tell them about orchestra. During the presentation, students will get to meet members of the high school orchestra and hear them play and talk about why they enjoy being a part of the orchestra. Students will also have the opportunity to try playing a violin, viola, cello, and bass. At the end of the class, students will receive a letter to take home to their parents/guardians and a form to fill out and return to Ms. Crawford if they are interested in joining orchestra.
Anyone interested in joining orchestra should plan to attend the 5th Grade Orchestra Information and Rental Night. Parents and students should both attend. At the meeting, more information will be given about orchestra and then parents will have the opportunity to rent an instrument from either Rieman Music or Beckers Fine Instruments.
Lessons for 5th graders will begin in October. Students will have a 30-minute group lesson once a week with other students who are learning the same instrument. Students are pulled out of class for lessons but the lesson times rotate each week so that students are not missing the same class each week.
In January, we will add rehearsing as a large group twice a week. Rehearsals will involve all members of the 5th grade orchestra and take place at the middle school. Students will continue to have a small group lesson each week, in addition to the large group rehearsals.
The year ends with a concert in May where students have the opportunity to show their parents and friends all they have learned throughout the year. The 6th grade, middle school, and high school orchestras will also perform. Students are asked to wear black pants/skirt/dress, a black or white nice shirt, and black shoes for the concert.
In June, all students planning to continue with orchestra in 6th grade will be scheduled for a 30-minute individual summer lesson once a week for three weeks. Lessons are held at the middle school in the music wing. More information will be given out in May.
