Our Club
The Club was established in 1829, at which time it occupied the green behind Castlehill. In 1874, the club moved to Walkers Haugh and has remained there ever since. The Clubhouse was extended in the 1970’s with the addition of the locker room (flat roof extension) and the in 1980’s the bar area was altered and the front elevation was brought forward to enclose previously external ground. Minor internal alterations were made to facilitate the enlargement.
We have just finished (April 2025) and large extension costing over £175,000 to modernise the ladies, and gents’ toilets, install a disabled toilet, and extend the locker room so there is enough space for everyone to change and store their equipment. The Club contributed £50,000 and external funding partners put in over £120,000. We are in the process of raising funds to support any additional work that needs to be carried out and funds to support the running of the club this year and into the future.
Our Members
The popularity of lawn bowling has surged in recent years and Peebles is no exception! Our membership has grown from 89 in 2016 to over 200.
Scotland has over 800 clubs, many of whom have two greens! In terms of the highest playing membership, we sit at 22nd and are top of the table across our district! This gives us greater representation in the competitive leagues but also puts us on the radar of Bowls Scotland who awarded us with Bronze, Silver and then Gold Status within their BowlsMark initiative in only a matter of months! We were the third club in Scotland to be awarded Gold. This means we have evidenced that we already have embedded in our culture and the running of the club; good governance, and best practices and have the necessary standards in place regarding coaching, well-being and supporting the local community to be affiliated with them.
We have a strong representation in the leagues and tournaments across the borders and have been approached to host professional tournaments at the club. We have great support from local business which helps us fund our competitions which in turn attracts great players to our competitions/tournaments.
Non-bowlers and local clubs also want to try out bowls and use our facilities, which is fantastic, and last season we held very popular sessions for The Borders Disability Group and children from Primary 5 to age 17.
Our club is managed by a dedicated and experienced board of trustees, comprising 14 members. We have a strong commitment to promoting the sport of bowling in the community of Peebles and building a warm, welcoming, social atmosphere conducive to improving the conditions of life for all members.
