PDX BRASS

We are a group of professional musicians who strive to bring excellence and fun to every venue. As a brass quintet, we can be more versatile and engaging than a large ensemble. As live musicians, we will provide a quality listening experience with personal connection. At our performances, not only will you hear some great tunes, we hope you may learn, dance, and fall in love with the music all over again.

Carol Smith, Trumpet

Carol Smith is a musician based in the Portland/Metropolitan Area. She has spent her life as an educator, performer, and advocate for music education. Carol currently serves as President of the Portland Youth Philharmonic Board of Directors and the Oregon Symphonic Band’s Board of Directors. She brings to this role many years of experience as both a professional musician and career educator. John Kim, Trumpet

A native of Portland, OR, John Kim is highly-active in the music community as an instrument maker, freelance performer, recording artist, educator and clinician. While completing his studies at Portland State University, under the tutelage of Professor Gerald Webster, John served in the role of Associate Director of Music at Skyview High School (Vancouver, WA). Kurt Heichelheim, French Horn

Kurt Heichelheim is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins, where he studied French Horn Performance with Denise Tryon of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Dan Schlesinger, Euphonium

Dan has been an active musician since his early childhood. He has been a featured soloist with the Oregon Symphonic Band and has performed with the Oregon Symphony and Pioneer Brass. Mark Vehrencamp, Tuba

Mark grew up in Southern California, but moved north to attend the University of Oregon and begin his career in the Pacific Northwest. He received his BM in music education and became the band and orchestra director at Oregon City High School. Read more.
