OPTIONAL: Walk the route while using your mobile phone to track your trail.
There are many apps that do this. Here are a few you might like to try - for their relative ease of use and that can be used for free.
Strava have free and premium (pro) versions of their app. Both allow you to map your route and share the track log.
Get started by downloading the app and creating an account: https://www.strava.com/mobile
Record your walk using the mobile app, then view the activity by logging into your account on the web, behind the 'three dots' icon (upper left), you can 'download gpx'.
Free app, need to create an account.
Get started by downloading the app and creating an account:
https://www.mapmywalk.com/
Record your walk using the mobile app, then view the activity by logging into your account on the web, view the route details, and using 'more' you can choose to 'download gpx'.
The web view also allows you to edit or create a route, which you can also export (save) as a gpx file.
If you have the fitbit mobile app, you can use it to record a route using your phone's location services.
See a step-by-step guide for creating and sharing your track via the Fitbit mobile app here.
There are many other options for creating a tracklog using your mobile device as you walk.
Let us know if you have another app in mind or would like help to choose one (or to use the map you recorded on it).
If you have questions about creating or using a tracklog from your gps on your map, please get in touch.
GPs devices enable you to export a gpx or kml file of your route that can be used either directly on walkingmaps.com.au or with Google 'My Maps'.
If you need to edit your route (map), you may like to try the suggestions below.
To change the route of a map/trail you have recorded, you can use an editor to add, edit or remove parts of your route.
Here's one suggestion - GPX editor (windows download)
Or view a long list of options on this Open Street Maps page
Some mobile apps also have this capability (see above) - although some also only offer it for paid accounts.
If you have saved a map (route) in a format that is not compatible with google maps and/or walkingmaps.com.au, you can convert it.
For example, some apps export your route as a 'tcx' file and you'll want to convert it to gpx for use in walkingmaps.com.au or google my maps.
Two options (again, there are many) include:
Alltrails.com - easy to use, requires you to create a (free) account
GPSVisualizer.com - multiple functions, no account required
If you have mapped your route in google my maps, you can export it so that you can add it directly to walkingmaps, not have to "draw" it in again.
As walkingmaps only accepts gpx files, this is a 2-step process:
Download the route from google my maps
Click the 'three dots' menu next to the map title or the layer containing the route
Select 'Export data or export to kml'
Convert the downloaded kml file to gpx
See two suggestions above, right
