PAUSE supports the campaign to shut down the Norlite incineratorNorlite is the only commercial hazardous waste incinerator in the state of New York. It accepts some of the most toxic materials from throughout the northeast for disposal. Residents in the nearby public housing project to the east of the Norlite plant have long complained about odor, dust and air-pollution related illnesses.  Norlite has a long history of environmental violations, resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and enforcement actions by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). We had enough of the pollution and damage to our health; we want to shut down Norlite!

Divest from Fossil Fuels

The major banks all invest in new fossil fuel projects.  Locally, the most egregious are TD Bank and Bank of America (also Merrill Lynch).  PAUSE advises everyone to divest from any major bank and open accounts at a local credit union or bank.  These institutions invest locally so it's a win/win.  Additionally, PAUSE was instrumental in the successful campaign to have NYS Comptroller DiNapoli divest millions of dollars in the state pension fund from fossil fuels.  Next: Divest the NYS Teachers Retirement System from fossil fuels (See Divest NY Teachers).

STOP buying stuff in plastic bottles!!!!!

OK, can we please STOP buying stuff in plastic bottles!!!!! Most of it isn't good for you anyway, and the rest is cheaper to mix yourself. Put it in a REUSABLE metal container. Are we really in THAT much of a hurry? Please pay attention to the amount of trash you throw away everyday and think about where it is going. Rethink, Reuse REFUSE .

Rapp Rd. Landfill Closure

Albany's Rapp Rd. Landfill is due to close in 2023 and the city has made plans for a transfer station.  These plans include loading our trash onto trucks and transporting our waste hundreds of miles to another communities back yard.  PAUSE is investigating increased public awareness about recycling, city wide composting, and anaerobic digesting as ways to deal with solid waste. Contact Us for details.
