What is a temperament test?
A temperament test is a structured evaluation that helps me (Paige) understand:
Your dog's comfort level in a kennel-free setting
How they interact with other dogs of different sizes and temperaments
How they respond to routine, structure, redirection, and new environments
Any behavioral traits that may be grounds for dismissal (resource guarding, excessive humping, severe anxiety, aggression, etc)
Booking your temperament test
Clients may book a:
Half Day (Highly recommended): Ideal for first visits (less overwhelming, easier transition)
Full Day: Available if you feel your dog is already well-socialized and adaptable
Note: Dogs who become overstimulated or show signs of struggle may have their stay shortened for their comfort
What happens during the test
Initial Introduction:
Slow entry with one-on-one attention
Gradual introductions to other dogs based on energy and comfort
Observation Period:
Your dog's body language, communication style, and response to group dynamics are assessed
I monitor play behavior, recall, energy regulation, and more
Redirection & Routine
Gentle corrections, praise, and structure help determine how your dog responds to guidance and routine
Important Behavior Notice
If at any point during the temperament test your dog displays:
Resource guarding
Signs of stress, shutdown, or severe anxiety
Excessive humping or fixation
Aggressive behavior (growling, lunging, biting, inappropriate corrections)
I may call you for immediate pick-up. Your dog will be placed in a crate in a calm, secure area until you arrive. This ensures their safety and the safety of the group.
Crating in this case is only used as a temporary safety measure, not punishment.
After the visit
At pick up, I'll provide:
A quick summary of how your dog did
Notes on any strengths or concerns
Next steps (including whether we recommend additional short visits or regular daycare bookings)
