The purpose of this project is to analyze the impact of social media on me and society at large.
From my own observation, this survey confirms that I am very addicted to social media. The survey states:
"You might not be 100% addicted (yet!), but you definitely need to evaluate how much time you're spending scrolling on your social media accounts. It may not be making you happy. One study by Facebook of teen Instagram users in the US and UK found more than 40% of those who reported feeling “unattractive” said the feelings started when using Instagram. It's a good time to start thinking about decluttering your digital life through a social media and digital detox! " I have a feature on my phone that tells me how much time I spend on social media.
This graph is really personal to me because I spend a whole lot of time on YouTube. In order for me to study or get things done, I have to put my phone in a different room or lock it in a box in order for me not to go on YouTube. This graph is so interesting to me because I thought I was the only person who a severe YouTube addiction. On the other hand, I am surprised X( Twitter) was so low, in the ranking. So many things happen on X, everyone is on it to express how they really feel about a particular topic.
Social media, I think, is one of humanity's greatest inventions. With social media, we learn, talk, and discuss with one another not just nationally but globally. One great example is the story of an African boy who learned through YouTube how to build a wind turbine in order for him to generate electricity for his town. The other side of the coin is what seems to me like a very shallow relationships. For example, most of my "friends" on Facebook, I have never met or really know them. We do not wish one another birthday wishes, or attend their weddings or other important events. It is almost like we are fake friends with no deep relationships. Social media also take a lot of our time, I can dedicate the same amount of time I spend on social media to learn a new skill for example, or go out, and focus on finishing my courses ahead of time. Just like anything, social media can be great or not depending on how we use it.
I spend an absurd amount of time on social media. Even though the survey says that I am not really addicted, I can see the grip social media has on my life. My attention span is about a few seconds. I even considered taking meditation classes in order to learn how to focus again. Also, time lost scrolling on social media will never be gained back again, so I need to remedy this so it does not steal my life away.
