PSP Certification Guide: Requirements, Cost, Exam Domains & Career Value

The psp certification is ASIS International’s board certification for experienced physical security professionals. Officially called the Physical Security Professional (PSP®), it validates expertise in physical security assessments, security system design and integration, and implementation of protection measures. Candidates generally need three to five years of relevant physical security experience, depending on education and other credentials. The exam contains 125 scored and 15 unscored multiple-choice questions across three domains, making the credential especially relevant to security managers, consultants, designers, and specialists.

What Is PSP Certification?

The physical security professional (psp) credential is issued by ASIS International, a global association for security management professionals. It is not simply a course-completion certificate. Those who earn the credential are ASIS board certified in physical security.

The psp security certification validates an experienced professional’s ability to move through the complete physical security lifecycle: identify assets and threats, assess vulnerabilities, determine appropriate countermeasures, design integrated systems, manage procurement, oversee implementation, perform acceptance testing, and evaluate security measures after deployment.

This makes the psp credential particularly useful for professionals whose responsibilities extend beyond operating security technology.

The knowledge behind the physical security professional psp designation applies to areas such as:

• Threat and vulnerability assessments

• Risk analysis and security surveys

• CPTED and defense-in-depth

• Access control and video surveillance

• Intrusion detection systems

• Barriers, locks, lighting and structural protection

• Security system integration

• Network infrastructure supporting security systems

• Project design and documentation

• Vendor procurement and bid evaluation

• Acceptance testing and commissioning

• Maintenance and lifecycle management

A useful distinction is that a psp certificate should not be viewed like a short training certificate. The official psp designation represents verified professional experience plus successful completion of the certification examination.

ASIS PSP Certification Requirements

The psp certification requirements are experience-based. ASIS structures eligibility according to your education and relevant physical security work history.

Education / Credential

Required Physical Security Experience

No higher education degree

5 years

No degree + current APP credential

4 years

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

4 years

Bachelor’s degree + current APP

3 years

Master’s degree or equivalent

3 years

ASIS also requires candidates to be employed full time in a security-related role, satisfy professional-conduct requirements, agree to the ASIS Certification Code of Conduct, and comply with certification program policies.

This experience requirement is important. The asis psp certification is designed around applied judgment rather than memorization alone. A candidate may understand cameras, readers, barriers and alarms technically but still struggle if they cannot connect those technologies to risk, operational requirements, budgets, procurement and lifecycle performance.

PSP Certification Exam Structure

The current exam contains approximately 140 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 125 are scored and 15 are unscored pretest questions. Candidates cannot identify which questions are unscored, so every question should be treated seriously.

The examination covers three major areas.

PSP Exam Domain

Weight

Physical Security Assessment

34%

Application, Design, and Integration of Physical Security Systems

35%

Implementation of Physical Security Measures

31%

The current Body of Knowledge places the greatest individual weighting on Application, Design, and Integration of Physical Security Systems at 35%.

Domain 1: Physical Security Assessment – 34%

This domain tests whether you can identify what needs protection, understand threats and vulnerabilities, and turn collected information into defensible security recommendations.

Candidates should understand areas including:

• Physical security assessment planning

• Asset identification and criticality

• Threat identification

• Vulnerability assessment

• Qualitative and quantitative assessment methods

• Physical security surveys

• Risk analysis

• Countermeasure development

• Cost-benefit analysis

• Legal and regulatory considerations

A strong practitioner does not begin with technology. The process starts with assets, threats, vulnerabilities, consequences and risk. Only after the problem is defined should controls be selected.

Domain 2: Application, Design, and Integration – 35%

This is the largest domain of the psp certification exam. It evaluates whether candidates can translate risk findings into practical security architecture.

Topics include structural protection, CPTED, access control, video surveillance, intrusion detection, screening, emergency notification, security staffing, communications, data storage, network infrastructure, power resilience and system integration.

Candidates also need to understand design documentation, scheduling, technical specifications, project constraints, performance requirements and cost considerations.

The deeper skill being tested is not knowing what individual security devices do. It is knowing why a particular combination of people, procedures, physical measures and technology is appropriate for a particular risk profile.

Domain 3: Implementation of Physical Security Measures – 31%

A security design has little value if implementation is poorly controlled.

This domain addresses areas such as:

• Pre-bid activities

• RFP, RFQ and bid processes

• Vendor evaluation

• Procurement

• Project management

• Installation oversight

• Configuration

• Testing and commissioning

• Final acceptance

• Personnel requirements

• Training

• Ongoing monitoring

• Maintenance and system lifecycle management

For experienced professionals pursuing the asis certified physical security professional credential, this domain connects engineering decisions with operational reality.

PSP Certification Cost

Current standard psp certification cost varies by ASIS membership and emerging-market classification.

Candidate Category

Current Exam Fee

ASIS Member

$580

ASIS Member – Emerging Market 1

$480

ASIS Member – Emerging Market 2

$460

Nonmember

$910

Nonmember – Emerging Market 1

$720

Nonmember – Emerging Market 2

$680

The standard retake fee is currently $480, with reduced emerging-market rates available. ASIS notes that a $160 nonrefundable processing fee may be retained if an application is denied. Fees can change, so candidates should verify the current amount before applying.

The true investment also includes preparation materials, training and study time. Candidates considering asis psp training should therefore evaluate a program by how well it covers the current Body of Knowledge rather than simply comparing course prices.

How to Get PSP Certified

A practical path toward becoming psp certified is:

1. Check eligibility. Confirm your degree level, physical security experience and current employment status.

2. Review the official Body of Knowledge. Identify weak areas before selecting study resources.

3. Submit your ASIS application. Provide the required professional and eligibility information.

4. Build a domain-based study plan. Allocate study time roughly according to the 34% / 35% / 31% exam weighting.

5. Study official reference materials. Connect concepts to real security scenarios rather than memorizing isolated definitions.

6. Practice applied questions. Focus on identifying the best professional decision, not simply a technically possible answer.

7. Schedule the exam. Approved candidates can take ASIS certification exams through Prometric, either at a test center or remotely where available.

8. Pass the examination and maintain the credential.

How Should You Prepare for the PSP Exam?

ASIS specifically warns that its examinations are experience-based. Candidates are expected to apply professional experience when answering questions instead of attempting to memorize reference materials.

A stronger preparation strategy is to study each concept through a decision-making framework:

Risk → Requirement → Countermeasure → Design → Procurement → Implementation → Testing → Lifecycle

For example, do not study access control only as cards, readers and controllers. Ask:

What risk requires access restriction? Who needs access? What authentication level is appropriate? What happens during power loss? How does the system integrate with video, intrusion detection, life safety and visitor management? How will performance be tested?

That thought process is closer to the work expected from an asis physical security professional.

ASIS lists reference materials including Protection of Assets – Physical Security, Implementing Physical Protection Systems: A Practical Guide, the Physical Asset Protection Standard, and the Business Continuity Management Guideline. Official study guides, review courses, flash cards and practice examinations are also available.

Who Should Earn the Physical Security Professional PSP Credential?

The physical security professional psp certification is most relevant to experienced professionals involved in areas such as:

• Physical security management

• Security consulting

• Security engineering

• Security system design

• Corporate security

• Critical infrastructure protection

• Facility security

• Security technology integration

• Risk and vulnerability assessment

• Security project management

The credential may be especially valuable when your job requires you to justify why a security control should be implemented, not merely install or operate it.

PSP Certification vs General Security Certifications

The psp security focus is specialized. It should not be confused with broader management, investigations or cybersecurity credentials.

The Physical Security Professional (PSP) concentrates specifically on physical security assessment, system application/design/integration, and implementation.

That specialization can make the psp asis certification particularly attractive to consultants, physical security designers, security managers, integrators and specialists who need recognizable evidence of professional competency.

Is the PSP Designation Worth It?

For a professional already working in physical security, the strongest value of the psp designation is credibility around the complete security-system lifecycle.

ASIS identifies benefits including validating physical security expertise, receiving industry recognition, strengthening marketplace competitiveness and supporting career development.

The credential also requires continuing development. ASIS-certified professionals must earn 60 Continuing Professional Education hours during each three-year certification cycle to maintain an active certification.

That requirement helps distinguish an active psp credential from a one-time training achievement.

Your Next Step Toward PSP Certification

If your experience includes physical security surveys, risk assessment, access control, surveillance, integrated systems, security design, procurement or implementation, compare your background directly with the current ASIS eligibility requirements and Body of Knowledge.

Start by mapping your strongest and weakest areas across Physical Security Assessment (34%), Application, Design and Integration (35%), and Implementation (31%). Then choose ASIS PSP training, official references and realistic practice questions that strengthen professional decision-making—not memorization alone.

For qualified security professionals, earning the psp certification means demonstrating that you can assess physical security risk, design appropriate protection solutions, and carry those solutions successfully from concept through implementation and ongoing operation.
