Pascuala Herrera’s keynote is titled “Building Toward Accessibility: Intentional Design for Equitable Learning Experiences.” Educators generally share the belief that classrooms should be equitable learning environments that offer the same opportunities to all learners, but intentional course design is essential to creating these accessible and supportive experiences. As we have moved to offering more instruction via learning management systems that potentially offer technological enhancements, we must actively address additional barriers these advancements may pose for receiving access and accommodations. If faculty are to create an inclusive and accessible learning environment, they must be prepared to identify those barriers and learn strategies that can remove them. Pascuala Herrera, a Harper College retired faculty member and accessibility specialist and now author, will share her personal and professional insights that will give participants awareness on how simple changes to course design can increase the chances of success of students with disabilities in all classrooms.
