Mission Statement

The mission of the Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (HSEP) Program in Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) is to enhance students’ college and career readiness through the study of homeland security. HSEP is the acronym for the program designated by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) for college and career readiness pathways in homeland security. PGCPS’ Homeland Security Program is housed within the Academy of Homeland Security and Military Science, which also includes JROTC programs. Bringing to bear the wisdom and involvement of dedicated partners, students in all pathways are exposed to a variety of topics within the homeland security enterprise and selected areas of specialization. With the involvement of dedicated educational, government and industry partners, PGCPS’ homeland security teachers utilize a curriculum informed by high standards, best practices and current events.

Gradually specializing in a particular area of study within homeland security, students in each HSEP pathway are exposed to a broad array of topics. The programs are designed with a balance of theory and practice, which serves to facilitate students’ acquisition of knowledge, skills and abilities applicable to a range of college programs and careers upon graduation.
