Basically, molybdenum disulfide is an inorganic compound consisting of sulfur and molybdenum and the chemical formula of this is Mos2.
The compound is categorized as a transition metal dichalcogenide. It looks like a silvery black material which happened to be the mineral molybdenite, the principal ore of molybdenum as well. By nature Mos2 is unreactive and also it is not disabled in oxygen and acids. The looking and feeling of Mos2 is quite similar to graphite. Mos2 is widely used in different industries for its robust nature and low friction as well.
Production
Naturally, Mos2 is found as Molybdenite, a crystalline type of mineral or jordisite, the rarest form of low-temperature Molybdenite. To have the purest form of Mos2 it has to be processed by flotation. The main particle present is carbon.
Molybdenite can be produced in another way also like thermal treatment of all molybdenum compounds with hydrogen sulfide or elemental sulfur.
How Can It Be Applicable?
1. Lubricant
The reason behind Mos2’s low coefficient friction is the weak Van Der Walls interaction among the sheets of the sulfide atoms. Mos2 within the particle sizes ranges from 1- 100µm is an ordinary dry lubricant. In the market, you can find only a handful of alternatives that can confront high stability and lubricity of up to 350 °C in an oxidizing environment. The Mos2 sliding friction test with the use of a pin on a disc tester at a low load will give a friction coefficient value less than 0.1.
The examples where Mos2 based lubricants are generally used are in two-stroke engines (such as in motorcycle engines), coaster brakes of bicycles, universal joints and automotive CV, bullets and ski waxes.
2. Catalysis
Mos2 is used as a catalyst for the use of desulfurization in petro chemistry, hydrodesulphurization as an example. The effectiveness of Mos2 can be advanced by doping with a little amount of nickel or cobalt. The mixtures of these sulfides are supported on alumina. The catalysts did not occur on the simple sheets but instead, they occur on the edges of the planes.
So these are some of the basic ideas about molybdenum disulfide. You can buy spray bottles as well. They are called Dry Moly Spray.
