In 2016 I traded in the 2011 328i for a 2013 335i coupe in black. I suppose I wanted a little more kick in the pants with some HP and torqs. Pictured here is my friend Tom who was the navigator role on the Road Rally course we ran in Wisconsin. This event consists of a series of timed segments in a cross country style race. You receive a sheet of information with "clues" to your first destination. The goal isn't to speed, but to reach the objective in a specific amount of time -- with penalties for being early or late (or never making it). The clues are not necessarily easy like... turn left at the third light. But many times involve local, automotive, or directional knowledge to decrypt. After you make it to the destination, you get the clues to the next location. It's a lot of fun -- especially in a 335i. People drive these in all kinds of cars and setups (not surprisingly there are computer systems available to get you to the next destination REALLY spot on time. These cars run in a different competitive class than newbie/beginner like me). BTW, those are my winter wheels/tires.
Of course I replaced the 328 on the autocross with the 335. I also changed my number from 328 to 335 and had a magnetic number plate made. I think it looks rather nice -- better than my first number made from blue painter's tape.
I added some software to my phone to take pictures during the autocross runs. It interfaces with a dongle attached to the OBD2 port on the car for speed, temps, etc. and overlays a copy of the track using GPS. Check it out.
A 2019 BMW event that is kind of like Autocross. John (a.k.a. "Stickers") joined me for the afternoon. We ran a course in a 328i sedan. More clues to John's nickname can be found in other areas of this website.
Luneburg, Germany has a driver training course along with a go kart track that is set up similar to a US autocross event. In 2009 I was there for there annual race car demonstration. You can pay to take a ride in anything you want (a Corvette and SRT8 Jeep were there -- but my pick would have been the Koenigsegg in the front). All the proceeds go to charity. It was a lot of fun, as was a run on the go kart track.
