Implicit Test
- The test was a lot hard than I thought it was going to be, in the sense that I had a hard time getting my fingers do what my brain was telling it to do.
- My test results were eye opening. It was nice to read the feedback about the results. These are things that I need to be aware of. Now that I am aware of these things I know that with time I will be able to change my results and it will allow me to be the best version of myself and to others.
- Some implications this leads me to is that I am unconsciously quick to judge someone based on their appearance and now that I am aware of this I hope to catch myself and change my mindset.
- As a future teacher this is good to know about myself because I would never want to unconsciously treat a student differently based on their appearance.
What is White Privilege
- My understanding of white privilege is that it is something that is, “…more psychological-a subconscious prejudice perpetuated by white people’s lack of awareness that they hold the power” stated by Peggy McIntosh in the article, What Is White Privilege, Really?
- To translate my understanding of what white privilege is, it is important to keep in mind that in the classroom setting, the teacher automatically has more authority over the students. The key thing to keep in mind is the students have parents and home lives; and having a strong and trustworthy parent relationship is key for the student to be successful.
- My freshman year of college I attend Oregon State and my last trimester there I was required to take a diversity class for educators. This course was one of the most impactful courses I took my freshman year. I will never forget how the instructor facilitated the class; each class we had a panel of students from the class sit in front of the class and discuss their opinion about the topic that class. When writing this reflection I took a look at the piece I wrote for this course; it was nice to see that I have grown as an individual related to this topic.
Classroom Culture
- Providing professional about culture people, students needs to see that people just like them can do great things.
- This video about the importance of classroom culture was great to watch because it provided some great insight as to why it is important to incorporate the students’ culture and background into the classroom. For example the speaker chose to become an educator because he wanted students of his same background in the field of education. The speaker emphasized the importance of students being exposed to individuals of many different backgrounds in as many professions as possible.
